Hazardous area classification at the design stage

At the design stage, hazardous area classification is done from drawings and process data, not on site. We prepare the source-of-release list, a calculation sheet for every source and the zone drawings, so that your electrical and instrument design starts from zones you can defend.

Who it is for

  • Engineering contractors and design offices with a new plant, line, tank farm or warehouse.
  • EPC contractors working abroad, including Turkish contractors building in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, who need the classification to IEC.
  • Owners who want the zones fixed before the electrical equipment is purchased.

What we need from you

  • P&IDs and the plot plan or building layout.
  • Process data: substances, temperatures, pressures and flow rates.
  • The equipment list with seal and connection types.
  • The ventilation concept: open air, natural or mechanical ventilation, air changes.
  • Your project specification, if it sets the classification method.

What you receive

  • A source-of-release list with the grade of each release.
  • A calculation sheet for every source: release rate, degree and availability of ventilation, zone type and extent (IEC 60079-10-1, and IEC 60079-10-2 for dusts).
  • Zone drawings in plan and section on your layout.
  • Equipment requirements for each zone: EPL, gas or dust group, temperature class.
  • An assumptions register, so that the classification can be updated when vendor data arrive.

Your stamp, our calculations

Many projects require deliverables to be issued under the stamp of a locally licensed engineering company. In that case we work as your subconsultant: we deliver on your title block and template, you review and issue. If your project specification calls for a code other than IEC 60079-10-1, tell us which one; the offer confirms whether we can apply it.

How it works

  1. Send the package

Drawings, process data and the specification.

  2. Scope and fixed price

Within two working days: the sources we see, the assumptions to agree and a fixed price.

  3. Classification

Calculation sheets and draft zone drawings, with open questions in writing.

  4. Issue and revision

One revision after your comments is included. Revisions after vendor data are quoted separately.

Scope, fees and timeline

ItemTypical time
Small unit, up to about 15 sources of release1–2 weeks
Medium plant, 15 to 50 sources2–4 weeks
Large projectAgreed in the offer

We quote a fixed price in writing within one working day of seeing your documents. The price depends on the number of sources of release, the documents and drawings available, and the scope you choose; there are no hourly rates. Quotations exclude taxes.

Basis of our work. Our assessments are based on the documents, drawings and data you provide. On-site verification remains the client's responsibility unless the proposal says otherwise. Every report lists the documents it relies on and the assumptions made where information was missing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you classify from drawings only?

Yes. At the design stage this is the normal way. Every assumption is recorded, and the classification should be confirmed against the plant as built before start-up.

Do you also classify dust areas?

Yes, to IEC 60079-10-2, including the effect of housekeeping on the extent of zone 22.

Which file formats do you deliver?

Calculation sheets and zone drawings as PDF on your layout. If you need CAD layers, name your format; the offer confirms what we can deliver.

Who signs the classification?

On a stamped project, your company issues it and we appear as the preparer. On other projects, Axosfer issues it, signed by the responsible engineer.

Send us your documents

Within two working days we send the sources we see, the assumptions to agree and a fixed-price offer. We work in writing, so every point and every figure is documented.
