Dust hazard analysis support for US consultancies

NFPA 660 requires facilities that handle combustible dust to have a dust hazard analysis and to keep it up to date; NFPA 652 set the review at least every five years. We prepare the desk part of the analysis for consulting firms: process-system worksheets, dust data, ignition sources and draft recommendations. Your qualified person reviews the work, visits the site and signs.

Who it is for

  • Engineering and safety consultancies in the United States that perform dust hazard analyses for food, wood, metal, plastics, chemical and pharmaceutical facilities.
  • Teams with more analyses than time, especially before five-year revalidations.

What we prepare

  • Process-system worksheets: for each system, the material, whether it is combustible, the potential for flash fire and deflagration, propagation paths, existing safeguards and gaps.
  • Dust data: Kst, Pmax, MEC, MIE and cloud and layer ignition temperatures from your test reports. Where tests are missing, indicative literature values are marked as such, with a recommendation for testing (ASTM E1226, E1515, E2019, E1491, E2021).
  • Ignition sources for each system: hot surfaces, friction and impact sparks, electrostatic discharges, electrical equipment, smoldering nests.
  • Dust accumulation: layer thickness against the area, to support your judgment of the hazard.
  • Area classification drafts where needed: Class II locations to NFPA 499 and NFPA 70 Articles 500 and 502, or Zones 20 to 22 to Article 506.
  • Draft recommendations with the reasoning behind each one, ready for your review.

Who does what

  • Your qualified person leads the analysis, visits the facility, reviews our work and signs the report.
  • We prepare the worksheets and drafts from your site notes, photos, drawings and test data, check our own work and list every assumption.
  • We do not visit facilities in the United States and do not deal directly with your client.

A first project

Start with one process system from a current project. You see the format and the depth before you send more.

Scope, fees and timeline

ItemTypical time
One process system: worksheet and recommendations3–5 working days
Desk package for a typical facility1–2 weeks
Each additional process system in the same project1–2 working days each

We quote a fixed price in writing within one working day of seeing your documents. The price depends on the number of sources of release, the documents and drawings available, and the scope you choose; there are no hourly rates. Quotations exclude taxes.

Basis of our work. Our assessments are based on the documents, drawings and data you provide. On-site verification remains the client's responsibility unless the proposal says otherwise. Every report lists the documents it relies on and the assumptions made where information was missing.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the qualified person?

Your qualified person performs or leads the analysis and signs it. Our preparer is a chemical engineer specialized in explosion protection; every assumption is documented so that your qualified person can verify the work.

Which industries?

Any process that handles combustible particulate solids: food and grain, wood, paper, plastics, metals, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Which editions do you work to?

NFPA 660 (2025), which consolidates NFPA 61, 484, 652, 654, 655 and 664. If your client's jurisdiction still references an earlier standard, tell us in the brief.

How are files exchanged?

By email or your file-sharing service. A non-disclosure agreement can be signed before the first project.

Send us your documents

Within one business day of receiving them we send our first observations and a fixed-price offer. We work in writing, so every point and every figure is documented.
